The Early Modern Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara supports a community of scholars and students committed to innovative approaches to studies of the early modern period, from 1500 to 1800.  The 2025 Conference theme will be religion.

DISABILITY STUDIES 

Examining the disabilities through the lens of literature. Disability studies can help people understand how disability is socially constructed, and how definitions of disability have changed over time. A growing field that lends itself to education, health care, law, social work, and more.

CHEMISTRY

Think battery engineering and single-entity electrochemistry. Using state-of-the-art potentiostatic and galvanostatic modes, students explore the thermodynamics of the reaction and the kinetics of charge transfer. Remote and on campus opportunities available for the 2025 conference.

Widely respected for our academic rigor, we are a university accredited online research program for high school students that opens the door to academic conference participation and journal publication for students willing to do the work.

EARLY MODERN RELIGION CONFERENCE 

On the cutting edge of humanities research and scholarship in the new millennium, the Early Modern Center, housed in the English Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, harnesses future technologies to engage deeply with studies of the past. Delving into the intersection of religion and literature during the early modern period of 1500 to 1800 reveals transformative shifts in religious thought and literary expression across diverse regions. Work with your research mentor to develop interesting research questions that have relevance in today's world.

Introduction to conducting research and academic databases, identifying sources to use
